Order Ticket

Platforms & Tools

The dialogue where instrument, size, order type and stops are set — the last point at which the whole order is still under your control.

The order ticket is the dialogue where a trade is specified before it is sent: instrument, direction, volume, order type, a price where one is needed, stop and target levels, time in force, and any deviation or slippage tolerance the platform offers. It is the last point at which every parameter of the order is still under your control, and the only record of what you intended as opposed to what happened. Most avoidable execution mistakes are ticket mistakes. Volume entered in lots when the field expects units, a symbol with a suffix that is not the instrument you charted, a pending order type left selected from the previous trade, a stop distance rejected because it sits inside the broker's minimum level — each produces a result that looks like a platform fault and is not. Checking the ticket rather than the chart before confirming is the cheapest habit in trading.
